The Toyota Land Cruiser has been in production since 1951. In 1980 the 60 series was designed to compete in a more modern market. Toyota used an engine that was a 4.2 liter in-line 6 cylinder 2F gasoline type. The engine assembly was all cast iron and very heavy but produced great torque and was very reliable. This engine was used until 1988 when the redesigned engine was a 4.0 liter 3Fein-line 6 cylinder engine. The Land Cruiser was in the same market as the Ranger Rover, Land Rover Discovery, Ford Bronco and the full size Chevy Blazer. However the design of the Land Cruiser was more of an off-road capable vehicle.
In 1989-1992 Toyota stayed with the 4.0 liter 3FE motor because it had more power and was more fuel efficient than the older 2FE design. The transmission for the land Cruiser in this model was only an automatic type and only 4 wheel drive.
Starting in 1993-1997 Toyota put a re-designed 1FZFE 4.5 liter engine. This engine made a big leap forward using a different fuel injection system and ignition system as well. The years of 1996-1997 had the same designation but used a crankshaft sensor which the earlier 1FZFE engine did not use. This is the same engine the Lexus LX450 used.
From 1998-2000 the land Cruiser for the 1st time offered a V8 engine. The first option was a 4.5 liter engine which was different from the older model but now you could request a 4.7 liter V8 engine. This engine was used in the Lexus LX470 and Toyota had great success with the design. The 4.7 liter V8 was offered all the way until 2004. The used Toyota Land cruisers are very durable and hold their value.
The 2005-2008 Toyota Land Cruisers use the Toyota Tundra 5.7 liter engine and have a tremendous amount of power and torque. The latest land Cruisers has a new 4.6 liter and the vehicle even has turn assist, a first in the industry.
